Mr. Popov noted that the fundamental difference between SSE and other Russian schools is that SSE is ranked high in the Financial Times ratings of the world’s best Executive MBA Programs, and that its courses are taught by foreign lecturers. On 7 November, Olga Loseva, Executive Director of SSE Russia, was interviewed by Ekho Moskvy Radio about business education in times of financial recession. Ms. Loseva believes that the value of good education is set to increase in today’s frosty economic climate. The economy needs top-notch administrators who will be able to navigate businesses out of the ongoing crisis. However, the sentiment about MBA programs remains ambiguous. Every person considering an MBA degree asks themselves the same question: will my very substantial investment in education ever pay back? This and other major concerns about career education in management were discussed at a roundtable titled "MBA in Russia. A Waste of Money or a Good Investment?", held on September 12 as part of the Baltic PR Weekend international conference. The event took place with the support of the Stockholm School of Economics. Dr. Igor Dukeov, Professor at the Stockholm School of Economics in Russia, Aleksey Popov, Executive MBA General Management Program Director, and many other roundtable participants held the view that an MBA degree is a great investment in your own growth if you choose the right school of business, and if you are able to make your new knowledge and skills work for you in the future.
That’s IT! ![]() Consistent Software Distribution held its annual conference for partners in St. Petersburg on 15 September 2008 to evaluate this year’s performance, map out its plans for 2009, and discuss the current challenges of the IT industry. Dealers came to the conference from all parts of Russia, from Kaliningrad to Sakhalin. CAD and GIS hardware manufacturers and software developers were represented, among others, by such heavyweights as Autodesk, CSoft Development, Truboprovod, Oce, Contex and Canon, to name a few.
Following the plenary part, Dr. Igor Dukeov, a Professor at the Stockholm School of Economics, held a presentation and autograph session for his new book. Mr. Dukeov also spoke on Strategy and Marketing at the conference. Open House at SSE Russia
More than 60 visitors came to the Open House, held by the Stockholm School of Economics Russia in Moscow on 16 September. Dr. Liljenberg also explained how investment in marketing can bring returns – a subject that sparked maximum interest in the audience. ![]() Johnny Lindström, Academic Director and Associate Dean of the School, told the audience about the academic customs and policies espoused by SSE, highlighting the benefits of the Stockholm School of Economics, and sharing his experience of teaching in Russia. Education, school rankings and important HR points ![]() On 11 November, Vedomosti newspaper joined forces with the Stockholm School of Economics to run a seminar featuring a number of prominent speakers from Sweden and Russia, most notably, Anne von Bergen, Senior SSE Advisor in Stockholm, and Igor Dukeov, SSE Professor in Russia. They were joined by Mikhail Zavileysky, CEO of the St. Petersburg Office of DataArt, and Olga Chebotkova, CEO of the St. Petersburg Office of TranSearch. ![]() The seminar focused on the methodologies of comparing schools of business and how to apply those methodologies hands-on when seeking the right school for your career and in your job search. 19 November SSE attends roundtable on corporate training ![]() The roundtable titled THE ALMA MATER OF CORPORATIONS: a System for Learning and Development continued a successful roundtable series on corporate HRM. Seven roundtables exploring the different aspects of human resources development and employee motivation have been held in St. Petersburg since 2005.
Olga Loseva made a presentation on Intellectual Assets in Times of Crisis on 19 November – a very timely subject today. Ms. Loseva highlighted the ideological and practical role of HRM in boosting productivity and achieving economic targets. Welding the knowledge drawn from contemporary specialist literature and marketing classics, she concluded that the most viable organizations must remain flexible and, therefore, trainable. To be successful, it is not enough for a company to merely respond to challenges as they arise; it must be prepared to anticipate change and respond proactively. The audience hung on her every word as Olga illustrated the strategic value of quality education as a way to boost the intellectual capital of a company, using SSE case studies. Find more about this seminar at: http://www.falcon-eye.ru/index.php?PartID=&ID=42 Russia takes steps to fight corruption ![]() On 18 November, the Consulate General of Sweden in St. Petersburg, the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Stockholm School of Economics, Russia hosted an international seminar entitled Anticorruption Measures in Northwest Russia in 2008. ![]() The seminar, which brought together the business community, government officials and scholars, reviewed case studies provided by international companies experienced in doing business in Russia. Executives from Statoil Hydro, Konsu and other companies spoke on the challenges, solutions and methods of doing business in Russia, as well as employment relations. ![]() The lineup of speakers also included officials from the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Nordic Council of Ministers and St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly.
Denmark’s Global Advice Network presented the Russian-language edition of its anticorruption business website, www.business-anti-corruption.com, a portal that provides support for small and medium-sized businesses in matters of anticorruption effort and integrity in business. Dr. Anders Liljenberg, the Dean of SSE Russia, summarized the seminar and described the possible further course of the anticorruption effort in Russia. A conference titled Human Resources: the Year 2008 took place in the conference room of the Novotel Hotel, addressing the current challenges, trends and outlook for the labor market. SSE teamed up with BFA and RBK Daily to host a seminar entitled "The Crisis Poses Global Challenges. What will be the Response?", where financial experts and investment analysts shared their ideas about the current situation in general and, more specifically, discussed continuity in times of crisis, the likely impact of the credit crunch upon the Russian economy, and possible scenarios of ending the crisis. The Stockholm School of Economics, Russia attended four exhibitions in Moscow and one in Kyiv in the past semester: 1. The exhibition Economic and Business Education was held at Moscow’s Radisson SAS Slavianskaya Hotel on 2 September 2008. SSE Russia made a presentation, which attracted a great audience. 2. SSERU made a successful presentation at the exhibition Education for Adults on 13 September 2008, hosted by Radisson SAS Slavianskaya. After the presentation, SSE executives networked with a broad-based audience of government officials and visitors. 3. SSE showcased its work in Russia at a specialist show titled Training for Top Managers and Executive MBA, also held in Moscow, this time at the Baltschug Kempinski Hotel, on 8 October. 4. Representatives of the Stockholm School of Economics, Russia networked with the audience at the International Education exhibition, held at Extropolis on 18 October 2008. 5. A representative SSE delegation from Russia and Sweden attended the Top MBA International exhibition in Kyiv’s Hyatt Hotel on 7 October. CORPORATE PROGRAMS ![]() New program kicks off The Stockholm School of Economics, Russia launched a 10-module training program, titled Sibur Business Academy, for the management of Sibur Group companies on 20 November 2008. The program will enroll 38 top executives from 16 Sibur companies, selected from 6,000 candidates proposed by the Group. Module One of Sibur Business Academy, taught from 20 to 23 November at a retreat near Moscow, covered Business Development. The participants highly praised the quality of the training material and structure of the course. We wish the Program Director, Evgeny Terukov, and all Program participants success and many illuminating discoveries in their teaching and learning. The next Program module is scheduled for the end of January. The Program will run until June 2010. ![]() ![]() SSE has also signed an agreement with Oktyabrskaya Railways to design and teach a modular training course for its top management. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Trainers’ Trainer stops by An Alumni Seminar was taught on 2 September by Olaf Hauer, a business trainer for BMW since 1992. Mr. Hauer is currently an International BMW Master Coach, working for BMW China. Mr. Hauer shared his wealth of knowledge about corporate change in behavior and team interaction. The Russian participants appreciated the fact that one of the three teaching theories used by the trainer is the theory of the Leader of a Collective, developed by A.S. The seminar was initiated by SSE Riga EMBA GM7 alumni. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Darja Kochneva has been appointed to the position of Head of Degree Unit at the Stockholm School of Economics, Russia ![]() Darja Kochneva, who holds a Master’s Degree in Philology from St. Petersburg State University, started her career in 1994 as a Sales Manager at Unilever. Darja joined IDV Ltd. in 1996. In 1998, Darja was offered a job at the St. Petersburg office of Nokia Mobile Phones, which had just been established. Darja was the first employee on the payroll of Nokia’s St. Petersburg operation. In April 2005, Darja Kochneva was promoted to the position of Head of Staff Training Department at Nokia St. Petersburg. Her responsibilities included designing and delivering training programs, managing a team of trainers located in 6 Russian regions, and running the company’s external training activities in Russia and the CIS. We are glad that Darja has enthusiastically accepted our offer to work at the Stockholm School of Economics (Russia). Her extensive prior experience and profound knowledge of the educational services market ill be a great asset to Russia’s foremost school of business.
